What is Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)?

Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) is a way for foreigners to settle in the UK. With Indefinite Leave to Remain, a person can live in the UK without any limits, and it is the first step toward becoming a naturalized citizen and getting full citizenship.

Usually, you have to have lived in the UK for at least five years before you can apply for ILR, but in some cases, you can apply after only three or even two years.

ILR can be earned through many different kinds of immigration visas, such as spouse visas, innovator visas, and skilled worker visas.

What is ILR card?

When you apply for ILR, you will need to enrol your biometrics (your photo and fingerprints). If your application is accepted, you will be given a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), which is sometimes called an ILR card.

Indefinite Leave to Remain(ILR) in UK doesn’t have a time limit, but it’s important to remember that you shouldn’t spend more than two years outside of the UK, or you might lose ILR.

What is “Life in the UK” test?

“Life in the UK” test is required for ILR applications. The test is centred on British culture, history, and traditions.

The test lasts 45 minutes and consists of 24 randomly generated questions. You must score at least 75% to pass. If you fail, you can retake it after 7 days. The test can be taken over and over until it is passed.

What's ILR's English requirement?

18-65 year olds must meet ILR English requirements. The minimum level for both speaking and listening is B1 on the CEFR scale.

If the candidate is from an English-speaking country, they can present proof of nationality.

Others must provide a Home Office-approved English test score or a degree taught in English. Degrees taught outside of the UK will need to be accompanied by a UK ENIC certificate that shows the academic level and, if necessary, the English language level at which the degree was taught.

What are the rules for "continuous residency"?

To be eligible for ILR, you must meet the requirements for living in the country continuously. This means that you can’t have spent more than 180 days outside of the UK in the past 12 months.  But people with worker visas, entrepreneurial visas, or talent visas often get stuck because their jobs require them to travel a lot.
